The North East Educational Foundation (NEEF) is surprising teachers across the District this week with a record $212,000 in grants for their school projects. This increased $27,000 from last year’s giveaway amount. The NEEF Board of Directors will travel to 35 North East ISD campuses this week to award checks for 45 innovative classroom projects.

The first two checks went to El Dorado Elementary School teachers Ken Brown, Amanda Pawelek, Therese Shields and Sandra Suarez on Tuesday, May 24.

“I was truly shocked, but I was also hopeful for the students at El Dorado, because they deserve this,” said Brown, El Dorado music teacher. “I’m very appreciative and supportive of the North East Educational Foundation and the work they do. I’m humbled. Thank you so much.”

He and fellow music teacher Pawelek will receive $11,000 to purchase new musical instruments.

Suarez and Shields have big dreams for a community garden broken up in two sections, one that will be accessible to their ALE students and another for the remaining students and the community.

“I saw everyone taking pictures and then I thought, oh my gosh, our dream is coming true,” said Suarez.

NEEF supplies grants for innovative ideas that will supplement NEISD curriculum and help teachers bring learning to life for their students. These funds are raised by NEEF board of directors through annual events and donations from the NEISD business partners and community members.

"We are so excited to see all of our NEEF team's hard work pay off and benefit these very deserving teachers this week," said Mark Baublit, NEEF Chairman. "Through the funding of these grants we are able to reach and enhance the learning experience of thousands of North East students each year. It is an awesome privilege to see the joy in the faces and eyes of these wonderful teachers who continue to go above and beyond to do more for their kids in their classrooms and schools. That is the purpose of the Foundation and the power of its Board of Director's service to these students!"

Other projects funded by NEEF this year include Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Makerspace activities, instruments, gardening materials, a 3D printer, Chromebooks, iPads and reading intervention systems. The surprise visits will occur the week of May 23-27.
