The 2014 North East Educational Foundation’s 23rd gala was a major success. This gala will be remembered as one of the most well-attended in NEEF ‘s history and is notable as the first time the silent auction took place through a smartphone bidding system.
The NEEF Gala raises funds through sponsorships, a live auction and a silent auction. Funds raised will go toward classroom enrichment projects in the North East school district. Project examples include new STEM library books, instruments, gardening materials, reading intervention kits and robotics programs. Projects must enhance learning and serve purposes outside of district-funded curriculum.

The students at Wilshire Elementary School are drumming to a new beat this semester. The North East Educational Foundation (NEEF) awarded their music department a 2013 grant to purchase maracas and a variety of Orff instruments, including soprano and tenor xylophones, soprano and alto glockenspiels, and tenor and bass metallophones.
“The students love the new instruments,” said Rebecca Hackett, Wilshire music teacher. “When they walk into the classroom and see the Orff instruments lined up, they are immediately excited and ready to learn. And with the variety of instruments, students are able to hear different timbres and have the opportunity to play different sizes.”
Each student has their own individual instrument during class time. Before the NEEF grant, students had to share or take turns which took away from student engagement.
“Because of the high cost of instruments, we would never be able to afford a class set on our budgets,” added Hackett. “With outside funding, each student is able to participate. We are so grateful for the NEEF grant.”
