Canyon Ridge Elementary School counselor Coral Bacon recognized a significant need for a safe space where children could focus on “Building Better Behaviors.” With a NEEF grant of just under $2,000, she acquired essential tools such as calming lighting, rugs, bean bags, sensory items, and fidgets. This setup allows students to regulate their emotions before returning to the classroom. Typically, students attend 6 to 8 sessions to learn valuable coping skills, communication techniques, and behavioral strategies to foster success in their learning environment.
Fourth grader Ian Torrez finds solace in this space, saying, “It makes me feel better about myself and everyone else.” Jania Poree, who struggles with anxiety when overwhelmed by classwork, visits to seek support. She engages in conversations with Mrs. Bacon and her peers, plays with the sensory items, and ultimately leaves feeling relaxed and ready to tackle her studies.
Under Mrs. Bacon’s guidance, students have made significant progress. They have learned to express themselves more constructively, discovered effective coping strategies, and made wiser choices.
