Students at Northwood no longer have to be embarrassed by being placed in a quiet corner or sent to the front office to de-escalate their emotions. Now, they can go to the Relaxation Station.
Lauren Petrutsas, a dedicated 2nd-grade teacher, played a vital role in establishing this soothing haven. She ensured that the room was equipped with various physical apparatuses, toys, and sensory items that were carefully selected for students to safely engage with during moments of heightened emotions. The impact of the Relaxation Station has already begun to reveal itself, fostering a supportive environment where students like Micah Powell-Ramey and his brother can play with the sensory items and regain a sense of calm. Micah articulates the benefits of this new resource, stating, “Being here helps me be kind. I help people when they need help.” Seeing how a supportive environment can foster kindness and empathy among peers is heartwarming.
Lauren has noticed a significant reduction in behavioral issues among her students, translating into greater academic success. The Relaxation Station is proving to be an invaluable resource, empowering students to regulate their emotions and excel both academically and socially.
