Unplug and Play the Northwood Way!

Oct 25, 2024 | Grants, Our Stories

Learning continues during recess at Northwood Elementary with the “Unplug and Play” project, led by Marcy Hildebrand and made possible by an $8,000 NEEF grant. Under the shade of majestic live oak trees, fifth graders engage in chess games and checkers at concrete game tables.

One-fifth grader, Jackson Miller enjoys playing chess with his peers during recess with his friends and classmates. Jackson says playing chess outdoors under the warm sun has improved his focus.

Annie Woodworth smiled as she described playing chess outdoors: “It challenges your brain,” and “It’s also fun to hang out with your friends, too.”

According to Mrs. Hildebrand, these and other students have displayed significant improvements in their standardized test scores. She also observed an increase in students’ critical thinking abilities because of these outdoor activities and other initiatives implemented throughout the day.
