Wonderbooks are Working Wonders at Vineyard Ranch Library

I was lucky enough to witness the excitement that filled Vineyard Ranch’s library when Librarian Melissa Barnes and dyslexia specialist, Morgan Hill received a NEEF Grant for Wonderbooks. Morgan Hill, the co-writer, explained that these books are specifically designed for early readers, struggling readers, or any students who simply want a read-along audiobook. The books feature large print and eye-catching graphics, making them a great addition to any library. Additionally, they have sing-along mode and a question-and-answer portion that students can engage with, making them even more interactive and beneficial for young readers.

According to Melissa Barnes, the new Wonderbooks are a huge hit among students. “These books are incredibly popular. I’ve seen students that are reluctant readers gravitate to those shelves…and come back for more week after week,” she noted.

Davis Russel, a second-grade dual language student, shared how the books have helped her saying, “It helps me to read. Sometimes I listen to the book first, and then I… read it.” Emily Springer also enjoys listening to the books because of the various character voices, and her sister Avery Springer pointed out how helpful it is when encountering difficult words. “When it’s hard words, … this will read it to you, and it may help you learn the word,” she said. “They’re very good books. I like how they read to you mostly.”
