Literacy and Wordcraft are Built One Book at a Time

May 31, 2023 | Grants, Our Stories

Olmos Elementary School’s 5th Grade English and Language Arts teacher, Salina Rosales, uses her learning experience to nurture students’ love of reading. She does this through the Graphic Novels after-school club. Salina “Loves it because it is things like graphic novels and anime that got me into reading in the first place.”

With the NEEF grant, Ms. Rosales built an extensive graphic novel and manga collection, including classics like Miyazaki’s “My Neighbor Totoro” and other titles like the “Dork Diaries.” Using the books as references, the students learn how to develop a plot, create a character, and make their comic strip.

Here at NEEF, we encourage teacher grant applications that display an innovative approach to helping students enjoy learning and thrive.
