With their thriving Ballet Folklorico program, Walzem Elementary has been making waves in the San Antonio community. Thanks to a generous NEEF grant of $2,746.22, the program has been able to expand and enrich the cultural experiences of their students.
Under the guidance of Teacher Georgina Sanchez and Family Specialist Nelly M. Alvarez, the Ballet Folklorico has become more than just a dance class. It’s a platform for students to explore their own cultures and appreciate the diversity of others. Through vibrant performances and engaging lessons, students are building a strong sense of community and belonging.
As second-grader Liliana Marquez says, “I like ballet folklorico because you get to learn about different cultures.” Liliana, wearing the old man’s costume for a dance, is just one example of how the program transforms students’ lives. Andres Barba also shares his enthusiasm, enjoying the camaraderie and fun of practicing with his friends.
The NEEF grant has provided essential costumes and props and ensured the sustainability of the Ballet Folklorico program for years to come. By investing in this cultural initiative, Walzem Elementary fosters a love of dance, promotes cultural understanding, and creates lasting memories for its students.
