The bright light you see as you go down the halls of Reagan’s JROTC is the light of opportunity that shines brighter due to the expanded Drone Program. The program was developed by COL William LaChance, Director of Army Instruction for NEISD, and funded with a $3,895 NEEF Student Impact Grant. This grant was used to purchase the drones and the competition equipment, ensuring the program’s sustainability.
The JROTC students may spark an interest in drones, aviation, or other related technologies. Beyond the career aspect, the program plays a crucial role in building teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. In COL LaChance’s words, “It is a gateway to an educational experience, to build friendships, and to the soft skills that are important for their success in the future.” This emphasis on soft skills reassures parents and educators about the holistic development of students.
A 10th-grade JROTC Cadet Sergeant, Andrew Beyer, demonstrated the skills they are gaining to compete against other schools. He skillfully flew through a ring, knocked ping-pong balls off small pillars, and landed the drone within a target. Andrew is hoping to win competitions with his team this year. Another student, Cadet First Sergeant Noah Cabrera, sees the drone program’s direct applicability to real-world jobs such as aviation. Both students expressed their enthusiasm for the JROTC due to programs such as the Drone Program.
