In the wake of post-COVID isolation, many students seek ways to reconnect and engage with their peers. An innovative solution has emerged at Wood Middle School: eSports clubs. Thanks to a generous grant from the NEEF, librarian Kimberly Hardy has successfully implemented this initiative, creating a space for students to come together, compete, and share their passion for video gaming.
Before these clubs were formed, many students were gaming alone at home, isolated with headphones on, and missing out on social interaction. Now, they can gather in person, interact, and bond over their shared love for gaming. Much like traditional school sports, participation in the eSports club provides a fun outlet for competition and requires students to maintain a respectable GPA, promoting academic responsibility alongside gaming skills.
Being part of the eSports club offers students more than just gameplay; they are learning valuable skills such as teamwork, friendly competition, and emotional expression through gaming. Seventh grader Bentley Devine shares how these clubs provide an outlet for their competitive spirit while allowing them to enjoy time with friends: “It’s just a lot of fun,” he says.
Trystan Emond also appreciates the competitive nature of eSports and the variety of games available. At the end of the year, they get to compete against other middle schools in an eSports tournament, which helps them learn sportsmanship and build confidence through winning.
