Last May, before the intense heat of summer arrived, NEEF had the opportunity to explore the Sustainable Garden at Wilderness Oak Elementary School. This was made possible by a NEEF Student Impact Grant obtained by former school Counselor Janice Lanford. However, Mrs. Lanford has since moved on to another job, and the students featured in the video have now transitioned to middle school.
Mrs. Lanford expanded on the previous year’s Peace Garden project by introducing new elements such as a greenhouse, additional seating areas, pavers, and decorative features. She also repurposed donated pallets to construct raised planters, adding a creative touch to the garden.
Former 5th grader Olivia Harrington expressed her passion for gardening and the joy of being outdoors. Her friend, Hannah Baker, highlighted how working with classmates in the garden has fostered teamwork and improved communication.
Reflecting on the garden’s impact, Mrs. Lanford remarked, “Working in the garden has helped the students become better learners and better individuals.”
