Inspiring Early Minds: Redland Oaks’ Transformative Library Initiative

Jan 28, 2025 | Grants, Our Stories

Shannon Perkins, the dedicated librarian at Redland Oaks, has successfully secured a NEEF Student Impact Grant totaling $5,817.21 to launch an innovative program called “Library Stations That Inspire Early Childhood Creations.”

This initiative is particularly significant as, in 2023, Redland Oaks became one of the NEISD hubs for the PK/Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) program. Understanding the unique needs of children with special requirements, Shannon purchased resources that allowed ECSE teachers to weave storytelling into engaging, hands-on activities and games. With a focus on STEM learning, these interactive elements nurture critical language and literacy skills while encouraging creative expression, setting a solid foundation for all Pre-K students, and preparing them for a successful transition into kindergarten.

The students learn to check out books and develop social skills, such as taking turns as they explore various stations. Pre-K student Dylan Ramcharan shares his excitement, saying, “You get to get books and play at stations,” emphasizing the joy of learning through play. Similarly, Sullivan Worley adds, “I like that I can play here,” showcasing the fun and engaging environment that the library has created for its young learners. Through this transformative library program, Redland Oaks fosters a love for reading and learning among its students, ensuring they have a well-rounded early childhood experience.
